Research

Dr. Hustedt leads a nationally-renowned research group that conducts research designing new surgical techniques and implants, running clinical trials, and examining health policy and outcomes.

Knee Denervation

Knee denervation is a revolutionary new procedure developed by Dr. Joshua Hustedt that focuses on treatment of chronic knee pain. This procedure targets the nerves in the knee to provide permanent pain relief. This is particularly helpful for patients who cannot get a knee replacmement or who have had a knee replacement and still have pain. A ground-breaking clinical trial conducted at the University of Arizona was published on this technique in July 2024.

Carpometacarpal Denervation

A new clinical trial conducted by Dr. Hustedt found that carpometacarpal denervation provides equivalent pain control to traditional arthroplasty at one year, but with recovery in 3 weeks versus 4-5 months. Patients treated with denervation have quicker recover, less side effects, and reduced costs of care.

Effects of Health Systems on Hand Surgery Outcomes

A lead article in the Journal of Hand Surgery by Dr. Hustedt examines the detrimental role health policy and health system changes has had on emergent hand care.

Rising healthcare costs

A new study by Dr. Hustedt published in Arthroscopy examines the role of healthcare reimbursement changes to physicians, ambulatory surgery centers, and hospital systems over the past 15 years.
